Tamra Patra was awarded to Fela Ram Biswas by the Government of India in 1972
Freedom Fighter Felaram Biswas
Fela Ram Biswas, a prominent freedom fighter, was born in 1908 in Satberia village (Kamarpukur) within the Goghat police station jurisdiction in the Hooghly district. His father, Mihirlal Biswas, bore the responsibility of the family until his sudden demise. He took on the mantle of family responsibility. He excelled academically and secured a scholarship from Pukuria Primary School, earning a gold medal as the district's top performer. His commitment to the Swadeshi Movement ignited his involvement in the struggle for India's freedom.
Guided by the principles of Prafulla Chandra Sen, hailed as the 'Gandhi of Arambagh', he actively participated in the non-violent movement. The English authorities persistently raided his residence in an attempt to apprehend him, resorting to the brutal treatment of other family members. In response, he concealed himself within the secret networks of Swadeshi activists. His participation in the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930 was marked by his involvement in picketing activities in Bali village, under the leadership of Shanti Mohan Roy. Additionally, he embraced indigenous products and shunned foreign goods as part of his dedication to the cause. Consequently, he was arrested, brought to trial in Arambagh, and subsequently sentenced to two years in Alipore Central Jail.
Upon his release, he returned to Satberia village with a renewed commitment to strengthening the Congress Organization. In 1942, he played a non-violent role in the Quit India Movement. Following India's independence, he devoted himself to various social service endeavours. In 1958, with the support of Prafulla Chandra Sen and Golak Dutta, he established Pukuria High School.
His exceptional contributions to India's freedom struggle earned him recognition in 1972 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi awarded him a Tamra Patra.
Fela Ram Biswas passed away on 25 March 1984.
